In the 19th century, Nagasaki emerged as one of the few international trading ports in Japan. Foreign traders flocked the city and a number of western-style houses were built on a hill overlooking Nagasaki and the harbour. Today, the same hill has been developed into Glover Garden, which boasts nine of these original homes. The most famous of these attractions is without doubt Glover Mansion, the most historic western-style house in the whole country. It was built in the mid-19th century and is particularly attractive, while other attractions and buildings of interest include a former boys' academy, the Mitsubishi Dock House and the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Museum. The views from the top of the hill are amongst the best in the city and worth the climb.
